Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) is a tactical multiplayer first person shooter released in 2012, developed by Valve in collaboration with Hidden Path Entertainment. As the fourth installment in the legendary Counter-Strike franchise, the game was launched for Windows, macOS, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 in August 2012, with a Linux version arriving in 2014. In December 2018, CS:GO adopted a free to play model, generating revenue primarily through cosmetic skins and in game items.
The game features two rival teams, Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists, competing in objective based modes. The most iconic scenarios involve Terrorists attempting to plant and detonate a bomb, while Counter Terrorists must prevent the explosion, or missions where Counter Terrorists try to rescue hostages held by the opposing side. CS:GO offers nine official game modes, each with unique mechanics and strategies. Alongside official matchmaking on Valve servers, players can also join community hosted servers featuring custom maps and gameplay variations. In late 2018, Valve expanded the experience with Danger Zone, a fast paced battle royale mode.
Upon release, CS:GO received largely positive reviews, praised for its refined gameplay and loyalty to the series’ roots, though it faced criticism regarding early features and disparities between console and PC versions. Over the years, the title grew into one of Steam’s most played games, attracting over 11 million active players monthly. It also became a cornerstone of the global esports scene, hosting international tournaments and professional leagues, and earning recognition as one of the best competitive games in history.
In March 2023, Valve officially announced Counter Strike 2, a major upgrade powered by the Source 2 engine, which was released in September the same year. With its launch, official matchmaking for CS:GO was discontinued, though a legacy version remains available for players on older systems and consoles unable to support CS2. Despite this transition, CS:GO continues to hold a lasting legacy within the FPS and esports communities.
